Paper Anniversary

Here's an off-beat idea for the "paper anniversary", your first anniversary:

Of course, only do this if you are really sure your beloved shares your sense of humour or your earnestness! You might want to have the romantic celebration a few days beforehand, just to be sure.

And here we were, thinking there was nothing new going on under the sun!

Celebrate Earth Day with your Sweetie!

Fun things you can do as a couple to help save the planet:
  • plant a garden and grow your own fruits and veggies - it can be fun getting dirty together!
  • take a shower together afterward - strictly for water saving purposes, of course!
  • tuck away the car keys and take a bike ride together - take an organic picnic, or go out for fair trade coffee somewhere
  • check out a farmers market in your area and buy local goods -you get to stroll around hand in hand and feel closer to you community
  • consider purchasing carbon credits to offset your lifestyle
  • educate yourselves by reading articles and books and sharing your ideas. Watching movies together (like An Inconvenient Truth) is a great idea , too, or you could join a community environmental group as a couple.
  • switch your household cleaning products to a greener option - read labels
  • if you are getting married plan a green wedding - (yes, the bride can still wear white if she wants to!)
  • turn the heat down and snuggle up!
  • turn the AC off and take your clothes off!
Just a few humble suggestions of ways couples can make the planet a better place from CouplesQuestions.com. Be gentle with our Earth. It's the only on we have.

Couples shouldn't dress alike. Here's proof.

An e-mail came through our inbox today that was so funny, irreverent and delightful that we immediately forwarded it on to friends and family. Then it dawned on us that someone had cut and pasted someone's blog and not given the link...for shame!! Bad Spammer. Bad!

We figured if we got this much enjoyment out of it, we should track down the blogger and right a wrong....well give that blogger credit, at least.

Here it is: The post in question, from the 15 Minute Lunch, evokes memories and, ok, a bit of humiliation to anyone who spent their formative years in the 70's....1977 to be exact.

Check out the post on the JC Penny catalog and have a laugh. E-mail this post to your sweetie so they can have a laugh, too.

Please Note: Though you may be moved by what you are about to see when you follow this link, you and your sweetie do not have to dress alike, ever. In fact we strongly discourage it.

Media learning

We were interviewed this afternoon for a local TV show, The Daily. And we learned something valuable.

Which is... always clean under the couch and the big comfy chair. The place was awfully darn neat and clean, but James the camera man wanted a different background, so we did an impromptu furniture arranging session.

And, holy Hannah! What a mess under the couch! Somebody must've shipped dust in from the Sahara. And there were long-missing books and toys that we'd given up on. The thing is we do clean under there, honest. But...

Now we take some solace from the book "Babyproofing Your Marriage" which notes that only dull women (with children, at least) have immaculate houses. Hey, they said it, not us!

In fact, they get at a very good point: once you have kids in the mix, something has to give. For most couples, the standard of household neatness is one of the first casualties. You simply have to set your priorities. If you try to keep up all the extracurricular activities or have a spotless house you will drive yourself and each other nuts.

Still, I do fantasize sometimes about how clean and neat everything will be when the kids are both in university!

Happy Couples, Happy Planet!

P.S. Ironically, as I type this Heather has just squirted soy sauce all over the white couch. Yes, I did say white. (The couch was bought several years before the children arrived. We're not that goofy!)

Laughing together

Laughter is a HUGE part of our relationship. We laugh a lot and it really connects us.

We find each other pretty hilarious and we are not alone. In fact, About Marriage has a poll running on how much you laugh as a couple. You can find their article here (with a link to the poll). Not surprisingly most couples laugh together sometimes or often.

Laughter is a source of connection. It is fun (even a bit addictive) in its own right, and has all sorts of health and relationship benefits. It is a great stress reliever... especially important when facing the trials and tribulations of childrearing.

Sure, marriage is a serious commitment. But it can and should be serious fun, too.

Happy Halloween!!

Do you and your sweetie have plans for the spookiest day of the year? Will you be making spider cookies with chocolate wafer bodies and licorice legs? Will you be bobbing for apples? Will you don your masks, pretend you are a lot younger and hit your neighbors up for some candy?

Last year we posted on various Halloween costume ideas for couples. This year we are sharing our handy-dandy pumpkin carving tip. It won't change the world but it just might change your life. Watch, be amazed and learn.

video

As well, if you are still looking for costume ideas, the Halloween party we went to last weekend had some popular costume themes that were repeated several times. There were a few Star Wars couples, the usual smattering of ghouls, and quite a few Bee themed costumes. This is quite a cute idea as one partner can be the bee and the other the beekeeper. (We did this last year, except Dan and I were the beekeepers and the kids were the bees). This year Dan and I went in kind of a roaring 20's theme. I wore a flapper outfit and he wore a Zoot suit.

Here we are in all our glory...Oy!

Have fun!

Oscar picks for 2007

Ok, this is somewhat off topic, but what the heck - it’s our blog!

The Oscars are in little over a week and love them or hate them they always seem to generate conversation. Around here, we were chatting about this year’s best picks in film for couples and for romance…any ideas? Feel free to contribute your thoughts or comments.

I haven’t seen all of the movies nominated this year, but here are my picks:

I am hoping for

  • Will Smith for Best Actor for ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’
  • Judi Dench for Best Actress for ‘Notes on a Scandal’
  • ‘Happy Feet’ for Best Animated Film
  • ‘Water’ for Best Foreign Language Film
  • ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ for Best Documentary Feature
  • ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ for Best Feature Film

What do you think? Are these films winners? Are they great films for couples to see together?

While we’re at it, since we’re talking about films, you might think about telling us about your favorite romantic movie of all time or your pick for the best “couple movie” - you know the kind that BOTH men and women like equally.

What do you think? Who are your picks for this year’s Oscar winners?

Valentine's dates under $20

Valentines Day is sneaking up on us. So what are you doing for your love?

Our suggestion is a kissing night. Total cost: one bottle of juice or wine. Full details are on John Ince’s article on kissing in our premarital library.

The Bargain Queen has a longer list of Valentines dates under $20. Be sure to check out both posts.

We are not really big fans of the barrage of advertisements that precedes Valentines (or just about any major holiday, for that matter). But we do play a game that works for us.

Heather rates how great/awful the various pieces of jewelry in each ad are. Dan gets an idea of what might work for future presents. It works because there is no pressure to actually ever buy. But the day after we win the lottery…

Free offer for our Feedblitz readers

Heather has written a book! And I am very proud of her.

Road Trip! the life planning guide for engaged and newly married couples is an enjoyable way to set life goals with the love of your life. The idea is that you take it with you on a road trip (or train trip, or Saturday mornings at the cafe, or…) and it walks you through a whole series of questions about your goals. It’s fun and a light read, though goal setting is important for couples.

As a thank you for your readership, we’d like to send you a copy. Free, no obligation, no cost for postage, yadda yadda… All we need from you is your permission and a mailing address anywhere on the planet. You can even be cheeky and ask for two!

The best way to leave your name and address is to leave a comment on this post. We won’t publish the comments! Your private information will remain private. We also will not add you to our mailing list (unless you ask us to). We’ll never use your address again, once we’ve sent you the book.

You can also send an e-mail to Heather at CouplesQuestions.com But oh my, do we get a lot of spam! So e-mails sometimes get lost in the spam filters. If you don’t hear a reply, send us another.

Not yet a feedblitzer? If you sign up by the end of January (and then send us a comment or e-mail with your name and address), we will send you a copy of the book as well.

We will be at two bridal shows this week, talking about the importance of marriage preparation or premarital counseling. If they go like hotcakes, we will need to do a second printing so it might take a little while to get your copy.

Happy Couples, Happy Planet!

Sex in space

OK, this is a bit off topic. But you got to admit, it is kind of interesting!

We are willing to bet at least a few of our readers will get to be tourists in outer space in their lifetimes. Warning: according to the LiveScience blog, the sex may well be underwhelming.

Seems unfair, but makes sense.

See? Just one more reason why you should do your part to make this planet a happy one!
